How to fix a screw without threads?

2024-12-05

If a screw has no threads (i.e. a smooth cylindrical screw), it usually cannot be screwed directly into the hole. To fix this screw without threads, you can consider the following methods:

1. Use a nut and a washer
Find a nut and a washer that fits the diameter of the screw.
Insert the screw into the hole, and then add a nut to the other end of the screw.
Tighten the nut with a wrench or pliers to ensure that the screw is fixed.

2. Use glue or thread locker
For smooth screws without threads, you can use some strong glue (such as epoxy glue) or thread locker to increase friction and fix the screw.
Apply a proper amount of glue on the contact surface of the screw and the hole, then insert the screw and wait for the glue to dry and solidify.

3. Drive in a fastener or metal clamp
If you don't have a suitable nut and washer, you can consider using a fastener or metal clamp. These fastener accessories can clamp the smooth screw and fix the screw by clamping.

4. Use a threaded insert
If the hole for the screw is in a soft material or one that is not suitable for direct screwing, a threaded insert (such as the "Heli-Coil" threaded insert kit) can be used. It will provide a contact surface for the internal thread, allowing the smooth screw to be fixed.

5. Use self-tapping screws
If the material itself can accept self-tapping screws, you can choose to use self-tapping screws. Although this type of screw has threads, it can create its own threads by screwing directly into the material.

6. Replace the screw with threads
If the above tools or methods are not available, consider replacing it with a screw with a standard thread, which can be fixed by simply tightening.

Depending on the different situations (such as materials, stress conditions, etc.), you can choose the most appropriate method to fix the smooth screw.
